Old age can be defined as a reduced resilience. Some of getting older is simply biological and hormonal, our bodies stop repairing properly and stop responding to stresses like we did in our youth. Hair goes grey, bones weaken, skin thins and wrinkles, organs operate at a reduced capacity.
But some of old age comes in the form of accumulated damage in your soft tissues. Let me explain:
An accumulation of scar tissue in your soft tissues reduces elasticity and can shorten muscles. This can affect your ability to move without great effort, because your shortened muscles don’t work like they used to, they become full of hardened “knots” and tender trigger points.
One key to keeping your body more youthful into your old age is to remain flexible and keep your muscle length. This is why Yoga is so good for an aging body — it forces your joints to remain limber and encourages your muscles to remain lengthened and toned.
Another key to remaining youthful could be removing the accumulation of long term soft tissue damage, so your muscles can remain free of “knots” and painful tender trigger points.
The more scar tissue I am able to remove from my clients, the more functional their unbalanced, problem soft tissue areas become. This must be why some clients refer to Precision Massage as one of their best defenses against the aging process.
