A client arrived at the office in pain yesterday. Pain was radiating across the entire lower back. After a brief survey of possible issues it became clear the legs were not even in length.
I treated the right leg first for appearing shorter, which suggested several muscle groups were tight. Upon palpation the muscles and tendons were extremely tight, and were then treated for 4-6 minutes with both myofacial release technique and Precision Massage instrument assisted deep muscle and fascia treatment.
Next I wanted to also rule out the left leg appearing longer, which suggested several different muscle groups on the left side needed to be evaluated and treated if necessary. Upon palpation the muscles and tendons on the left were extremely tight. I spent 10-12 minutes of Precision Massage focused instrument assisted techniques on these left side areas needing treatment.
It was no mystery why pain was radiating across the lower back. When legs are uneven length nearly all muscles in the lower body must work harder to do their job. Uneven leg length is one of the most common problems clients come in with, so I have gotten a lot of practice targeting the exact soft tissue structures involved in this unfortunate situation.
In less than 20 minutes, I was able to address the cause of both a short leg and a long leg, restoring both legs to appear equal again in length. For the remaining 10 minutes of the session the para-spinal muscles in the lumbar region received some medium-deep work to loosen the still very tight lower back. After the full treatment ended, most of the soft tissues contributing to the uneven leg length were addressed with precision and care.
The client got off the stable and reported the radiating pain was no longer present. It’s the client success stories just like this that make the work so rewarding.
